One pack each month,
written to be acted on.

Most of what a retained engagement produces arrives in a single document. This is what it contains, what it looks like, and how long it should take you to read.

Why a pack

A dashboard tells you what the numbers are. It does not tell you what they mean, and it never tells you what to do about them. The monthly pack exists because the gap between those three things is where owners actually lose money — the figure was on a screen the whole time, and nobody read it out loud.

So the pack is written, not generated. It answers what happened, what it means, and what now needs deciding, in that order, in language that does not assume an accounting background.

The figures

The month in three numbers
and two charts.

The same artefacts in the same order every month, so you learn where to look: where the cash gets tight, which line is carrying the margin and which is quietly spending it, and what now needs a decision. This is the shape of it.

Cash on hand

$468k

Up $66k on the prior quarter

Gross margin

31.4%

Down 2.1 points on the prior quarter

Days sales outstanding

41 days

Down 7 days on the prior quarter

Cash & runway

Thirteen weeks of closing cash

Maintained weekly, not rebuilt in a panic. The plan clears the floor — by eleven days.

  • Week 8 trough $264k — eleven days of headroom
  • Operating floor $200k
Margin

Gross margin by service line

Costed line by line, so a line that is subsidising itself cannot hide inside the blend.

  1. Installation41.2%
  2. Service contracts38.6%
  3. Parts & supply22.4%
  4. New product line8.9%
  • Blended target 30%
  • Flagged for review priced below cost to serve

  2. 02Cash & the 13-week runwayClosing balance, week by week
  3. 03Margin by service lineWhere the gross profit is made
  4. 04Forecast against planVariance, explained in a sentence
  5. 05Decisions on the tableWhat needs a call this month

Illustrative figures, drawn to show the form of the reporting. Not client data.

The standard

Four things that hold
in every pack.

  1. 01

    Same shape, every month

The pack does not get redesigned. The sections arrive in the same order so you stop reading it and start scanning it — which is the point at which reporting becomes useful.

  2. 02

A reading, not a data dump

Every number that moved gets a sentence saying why. If a variance cannot be explained, that is written down too, rather than left for you to notice.

  3. 03

    Delivered on a published calendar

The pack lands between the tenth and the twelfth, and the working session follows within the week. You never have to chase it.

  4. 04

    Fit for an outside reader

The same pack, with its appendices, is what a lender or a board sees. Nothing has to be rebuilt when someone else starts asking.

Before the pack

Reporting is only as good
as the close beneath it.

Where the books need work first, that is said plainly and handled as part of the opening ninety days — a clean chart of accounts and a structured close come before anything gets charted. The engagement chapter sets out how that runs.

Next step

Thirty minutes,
and a straight answer.

Bring one question you cannot currently answer from your own reporting. If a fractional CFO is not the right answer, you will hear that on the call — there is no proposal waiting at the end of it.
